Dar el Janoub

A family-run hotel, shaped by Moroccan traditions.

/ The story

A family story
at the edge of the Sahara

Drawn to Morocco and its rich culture and traditions, my parents bought a piece of land at the foot of the dunes of Merzouga and built Dar el Janoub from the ground up. What began as their dream became a family-run hotel, welcoming travellers to this part of the desert ever since.

Dar el Janoub has been part of my life since childhood. I’ve watched the region change over the years, while the warmth and hospitality that first attracted my parents have remained.

Today, that same spirit lives on through the people who have been part of this journey for years, welcoming guests with the genuine care that makes Dar el Janoub so special.

/ The hotel

Inside
Dar el Janoub

Built using traditional materials and inspired by the architecture of southern Morocco, Dar el Janoub is a welcoming hotel with 21 rooms, surrounded by the landscapes of Merzouga.

Courtyards, shaded terraces, a swimming pool and inviting communal spaces create a relaxed setting for both individual travellers and groups.

The hotel can also be reserved for private retreats, celebrations and gatherings, offering a distinctive setting beside the dunes.

/ The rooms

Rooms with
Moroccan character

Warm earthy colours, traditional details and inviting interiors that reflect the character of southern Morocco. Each room has its own personality, with views towards the courtyards or the surrounding landscape.

Designed for rest and relaxation, the rooms offer a welcoming space to return to, whatever the day may bring.

/ The desert

A setting
like no other

The vast landscapes of Erg Chebbi offer an extraordinary setting for reflection, wellbeing and time spent together, far from the familiar surroundings of everyday life.

The desert has its own rhythm. We simply follow it.

What the days are made of

Into the desert

There is something unforgettable about venturing into the dunes of Erg Chebbi. The thrill of a 4×4 crossing or a camel ride in the golden evening light.

Rissani & local life

Step into the lively market of Rissani, a colourful mix of voices, aromas and local traditions, offering a glimpse into a side of Morocco that has kept much of its original character.

The table

Freshly baked bread, traditional homemade dishes and the aromas of local spices. Mint tea poured with care and evenings filled with the rhythms of Berber music.

Sunrise & sunset

The first light of morning, the changing colours of the sand and the last rays of sunshine disappearing behind the dunes.

Yoga & meditation

Morning yoga overlooking the dunes, guided meditation in the open air and breathwork sessions surrounded by the beauty of the Sahara.

A night under the stars

Spend a night in a traditional desert camp, surrounded by the stillness of the Sahara. The silence of the dunes and the vast, star-filled sky create an unforgettable experience.

the Sahara

Dar el Janoub welcomes yoga teachers, wellness practitioners and retreat organisers wishing to bring their own groups to the Sahara. Each retreat can be thoughtfully planned around the organiser’s vision, with accommodation, meals and activities tailored to the group.
