/ Our story
From Tuscany to Morocco, the places and people behind Soglia.
/ Where I come from
I was born in Tuscany, where family, traditions and the simple pleasures of life have always held a special place.
But Morocco has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. Year after year, I travelled there with my parents, discovering its colours, its contrasts, its warmth and the soul of the desert. What began as a place to explore slowly became somewhere I felt I belonged, shaping my memories and becoming part of who I am.
These two places have always been connected to my family’s story. In the heart of Chianti stands a family property that holds generations of history. Far away, at the edge of the Sahara, a small hotel near the dunes of Merzouga carries another chapter of our family’s journey.
Two very different places, each with its own beauty and character, yet both holding a special place in my heart.
After years of living abroad and discovering new places, I found myself returning to what had always mattered most. A desire to reconnect with my roots, to embrace the places that shaped me, and to share a little of their beauty with others.
And somewhere between Tuscany and Morocco, Soglia was born.
/ Tuscany, since 1960
In 1960, my grandfather bought a piece of land in the Tuscan countryside, with little more than the stone walls of an old building standing on it. After he passed away, the property remained untouched for decades, until my brother decided to bring it back to life. Today, Il Cellese is a private villa, carefully restored while preserving parts of its original architecture.
Surrounded by vineyards, olive trees and the landscapes I’ve known since childhood, it continues to bring our family together. Long lunches around the table, homemade pasta, wine from our own vineyards and conversations that stretch well into the evening. Days by the pool, cooking together, exploring nearby villages or simply enjoying the views with nowhere else to be.
Over the years, Il Cellese has become a place filled with some of our happiest memories. And seeing others make their own here is what makes it so special to me.
/ Merzouga, since 1999
There was something about Morocco that made my parents want to become part of it. The people, the traditions, the way of life. They bought a piece of land facing the dunes of Merzouga and built Dar el Janoub from the ground up, a family-run hotel that has been part of our lives ever since.
I’ve been coming here with my parents and siblings since we were very young, back when tourism had barely reached this part of the desert. Much has changed, but the feeling of being here hasn’t. Traditional Moroccan meals shared around a table, mint tea overlooking the dunes and days spent without looking at the time. Evenings filled with music, laughter and conversations that last for hours, followed by nights under a sky full of stars.
Some of my favourite memories are as simple as the drive to Rissani. An empty road through the desert, the sun setting over the dunes, windows down, music playing and singing along with the wind in your hair and the fresh desert air on your face.
It’s one of the few places where I can completely switch off, with no plans, no rush and nowhere else I’d rather be.
/ Why Soglia
Soglia means “threshold” in Italian. A name that reflects the idea behind it: opening the doors to two places deeply connected to my family’s history, and inviting others to discover what makes each of them so special.
Though worlds apart, Tuscany and Morocco share something that has always mattered to me. Family, the joy of being together, the freedom to disconnect from everyday life and reconnect with ourselves and those around us.
Soglia is my way of sharing these places, their stories and the feeling of belonging that has always brought me back.
